Turning Good Writing into Great Writing Raising the Barr Weekly Memo: Issue 515

This is the season when retail businesses are ramping up their creativity to lure customers to their websites or brick-and-mortar buildings. While it’s unnecessary to reinvent the wheel, it is necessary to continue to improve and elevate your writing, your social media and blog posts to attract clients and keep them coming back again and again. What qualities turn good writing into great writing and make you stand out in the crowd? Here are some of those traits:

They bring our words to life, stimulate our mind and our emotions and connect our audience to our insights. They also substantiate the points we are making.

Metaphors and Similes
They add interest while allowing us to emphasize and exaggerate our message and intent and activate our imagination. In other words, the let us see things from a different perspective.

Don’t overcomplicate your message. Simplify the way you communicate your words. Although I agree that you should not dumb down your language, I also suggest you keep it simple. 

What are the key messages you are attempting to communicate? Stay focused on the main ideas and do not get digress in various directions.

Position yourself as a subject of interest with the proper authority. Demonstrate and share your knowledge and wisdom and your track record of success.

It’s not the quantity of the words you use but their quality and brevity. Be brief and avoid superfluous words that may distract your audience.

Keeps your reader engaged, makes you memorable, and help release tension. When humor creates laughter, it decreases stress hormones while releasing endorphins, which help promote our overall sense of well-being.

Structure and Grammar
Using proper grammar, sentence structure and writing style are essential for effective writing while making you stand out.

What’s in it for them? That is the key question your masterpiece should answer. How will it improve their life or business and what is the profound value it delivers?
