Where Do You Focus Your Energy?

When writing Why Invest Your Energy With Existing Clients? yesterday, it occurred to me that, consciously or subconsciously, we often make the decision in which activity to invest our energy. And although these decisions may seem harmless, I suggest they have a huge impact on our potential life and business success. Let’s examine a few:

  • Spending more time attracting strangers as new clients instead of conversing more with existing clients on ways to improve their business?
  • Mindlessly surfing the Internet instead of contributing our knowledge to an online discussion attracting our peers and clients?
  • Collecting more ideas for future potential use instead of executing a few right now?
  • Letting our prospective client choose us instead of making it a collaborative evaluation process.
  • Proceed with what is in our best interest instead of the client’s best interest.
  • Perfecting a piece we wrote instead of releasing it less than perfect while using the additional time to engage in another productive or enjoyable activity.
  • Worrying about where the next piece of business will come from instead of consistently engaging, helping and providing our clients with value.

So before selecting your next activity, simply ask yourself: “Is the activity I am about to engage in, is going to improve my success or that of my clients or the people I love?” If so, do it. Otherwise, don’t!
