Freedom Raising the Barr Weekly Memo: Issue No. 26

This week’s reflection point: Tomorrow is July 4th, marking the independence of America. Many of us will celebrate and mark the day with barbecues, picnics, parades and fireworks. For me it takes on a special meaning beyond all the festivities.

35 years ago I arrived in this country not knowing the language, the culture or the people. I had always dreamed of being here in the US and was in awe of it all. In a few short months I came to realize the real meaning of freedom. Here, without interruption of military emergencies, I was allowed to learn, to observe my religion and live as I chose.

This country had so many opportunities for me; most importantly to work hard and excel at becoming an entrepreneur. Little did I realize when I stepped off the plane in the Big Apple, New York, that I’d be where I am today. Now as a husband to my wife of 34 years, a father of two and a grandfather of two, I can say this is my country.

I’ve seen purple mountain majesties in the great west and golden waves of grain as I drove through the plains. America the beautiful lives in my heart and I proudly display her grand old flag in front of my home 365 days a year. I’m truly blessed and thankful for living and thriving in this great land.
