Pragmatic Technologies for Life and Business Success®

If you know me, you know my love for music. I was (and still am) a professional musician. You also know about my love and study of photography as an art, among other loves (some of you have even met my wife and family). Add to that my fondness for the game of pickleball and, of course, my dedication to and fascination with the business world and the emerging landscape of AI. I’ve always been drawn to exploration, learning, and the pursuit of mastery in every art I practice, always seeking practical and insightful ways to apply these lessons to my life, my business, and that of my clients.
I have learned, there’s a strange magic that happens when you stop trying to take a photo and start trying to see. This past June, while walking the streets of New York with Peter Turnley, I discovered that photography has almost nothing to do with cameras. It’s about awareness, curiosity, and connection. Each frame is a choice, and every choice is a mirror of how we see the world.
Before that week, I thought photography was my creative outlet. Now I understand it’s how I learn to see. Each encounter in New York reminded me how vision, empathy, and courage create art that moves people. Those same forces shape every business that wants to make an impact.
After returning home, I compiled the long list of insights I captured throughout the week: moments, phrases, emotions, and lessons scribbled in notebooks and on my phone. I digitized and analyzed them, revealing the most important takeaways. Then, with the help of AI, I organized and refined the patterns, uncovering the deeper lessons.
The first lesson was about attention. Every time you look down at the ground, you miss what’s unfolding right in front of you. In business, it’s the same. When leaders bury themselves in metrics and meetings, they lose sight of the living, breathing world around them: the customers, the conversations, the signals of change. Vision is a muscle, and it atrophies fast if you don’t use it.
Then there’s connection. Photography begins and ends with respect for the people in front of the lens. You can’t fake sincerity. You earn trust through curiosity and care. When I asked strangers if I could take their photo, it wasn’t about composition, it was about honoring them. Great brands do the same. They tell stories that carry humanity, not just messaging. Even as AI transforms how we create and communicate, the heart of connection remains human. Technology should amplify empathy, not replace it.
You can view a selection of the images I captured that week in New York here: My NYC Street Photography Gallery. Each photo reflects the same search for connection and truth that shaped these lessons.
Another truth: timing is everything. On the street, hesitation costs you the shot. In business, hesitation costs you relevance. Opportunities rarely announce themselves politely; they appear for a heartbeat and then vanish. Mastery lies in noticing and acting while others are still thinking.
I also learned that rules exist to be tested. The best photographs aren’t perfect. They’re honest. The same goes for leadership. Perfection chokes progress. Detachment and experimentation are what move you forward. Growth is messy, and that’s the point.
Most of all, I realized every image is an autobiography. What I photograph reveals what I value. Every leader, every company, every brand tells a story through what it chooses to notice. The stories we share with the world reflect our inner clarity, or the lack of it.
Photography, at its core, is a lesson in emotion. A picture succeeds when it moves the heart. So does every act of communication. The goal isn’t more content; it’s connection that resonates. Whether through a photograph, a strategy, or a campaign, the question is always the same: does it move someone?
Street photography taught me to look closer, act faster, and care deeper. It taught me that seeing is an act of leadership.
