Why AI Might Replace You (And How to Make Sure It Doesn’t) Raising the Barr Weekly Memo: Issue 656

AI isn’t coming for your job. It’s already here.

Consultants, strategic advisors, and thought leaders are facing a silent but aggressive disruption. The rise of AI tools that synthesize data, generate insights, and even deliver customized recommendations in seconds is dismantling the value proposition of many traditional consulting and advisory services.

Why You Might Be Obsolete Sooner Than You Think

  • Speed and Scale: AI doesn’t sleep, doesn’t bill by the hour, the project, or the value, and can process more data in one minute than most consultants can in a week or even longer.
  • Commoditization of Advice: Platforms like ChatGPT, Harvey, and other AI copilots are offering strategic input for free or at dramatically lower fees.
  • Client Expectations Are Shifting: Businesses now expect real-time answers, predictive analytics, and scalable strategies. Traditional PowerPoint decks and stakeholder interviews no longer cut it.

Most Consultants and Advisors Are Replaceable

If your core value lies in research, reporting, or templated solutions, AI can already outperform you. And it’s only getting better.

Reinvent or Become a Statistic

To avoid obsolescence, here’s what you should consider doing now:

  1. Become a Systems Thinker: AI is a tool, not a thinker. Consultants who can map complex, cross-functional systems and anticipate second-order consequences will remain invaluable.
  2. Build AI Fluency: If you can’t leverage tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or enterprise AI suites in your workflow, you’re already behind. Learn prompt engineering. Automate repetitive tasks. Augment your insight delivery.
  3. Move Up the Value Chain: Shift from operational or tactical work to high-level strategic transformation. Help clients decide what to do, not just how to do it.
  4. Double Down on Trust and Insight: AI can give information. It can’t build relationships, navigate politics, or tailor advice to a boardroom dynamic.
  5. Master Change Leadership: Clients need guides who can help entire organizations adopt and adapt to AI-driven strategies. Being the bridge between technology and people makes you indispensable.
  6. Innovate Service Models: Create new offerings that merge AI capabilities with human expertise, such as AI-enabled scenario planning, continuous advisory subscriptions, or real-time decision support.
  7. Expand Global Reach: Use AI tools to scale your knowledge, collaborate across borders, and serve clients in markets you couldn’t reach before.

Addressing the Skeptics

  • “Consulting is too human to automate.” True, at the highest levels. But most consultants operate far below that threshold. AI is replacing the mechanics, not the magic. If your work is heavily process-driven or easily templated, you’re exposed.
  • “Clients want personal interaction.” They want results, period! The consultant who achieves results faster, better, and with dramatic impact on the client’s success (with AI augmentation) will win.
  • “AI can’t understand nuance.” Not yet. But every day it gets better at context, tone, and multi-variable synthesis. Betting against exponential improvement is not a strategy.

Evolve Now or Fade Quietly

There’s no place for average in a world where intelligence is becoming a commodity. Great consultants will use AI to amplify their impact. The rest will watch their relevance dissolve.

The choice is yours. Reinvent your value or risk becoming irrelevant.

That’s why I designed the AI Insider Lab, launching October 1st, to give you the tools, insights, and strategies to not just survive the AI disruption, but lead through it and thrive.
